Chris and Kristen – Engaged

I first met Chris about 22 years ago, it was a bright April morning and I was trying to get adjusted to my new home.

Ok, with out getting any more graphic, my brother is engaged. Although my brother and I are quite similar, we also have distinctly different personalities. Chris and Kristen are quite the goofballs, and I think it is noticeable in their engagement photos.  They have plans to get married at the Thursday Club, in what is slowly becoming one super wedding.

Anyways, enjoy the photos!

Because it was overcast, I asked them to lift their chin a little.

Red Tie Photography – Internship?

I have been kicking around this idea for awhile, and I am interested to see if there is a demand for it. This is something that I really wish I had access to when I was starting out, and I honestly believe it can be a valuable resource to some people.

I do not claim to be any sort of master, or all knowing, and I understand that. A big craze right now is people who are experienced offering workshops that people can pay to attend. These talks range anywhere from the business of photography, shooting, lighting, marketing, etc. hopefully taught by experts. This is different.

I am offering a free internship, which I will only accept a few people. I feel keeping the number small will allow each individual more time to learn. I will gauge how many people I will take on depending on the level of interest.

Of course, I am still sorting this all out. I do not know what I want to go over, or how long it will be, or if I even will be making this at all.

Here are a few ideas on what I will be doing/covering:

  • Gear – what I use, what I believe you need, etc.
  • Shooting – hopefully set up a few group shoots to where I can talk people through things.
  • Your camera – get you off auto, and learn how to take advantage of your dSLR.
  • My products and the labs I use.
  • My shooting and editing philosophy.
  • How I got started to where I am now, and how I would recommend it.
  • Maybe bring an intern or 2 to a wedding.

Who this internship IS for:

  • Someone interested in wedding photography, and is serious about it.
  • Someone who has a dSLR, and wants to learn more from it. Sorry, point and shoot cameras will NOT suffice.
  • You do not need to have a lot of gear, but I am going to be recommending a lot to you. I feel if you are doing wedding photography, it is important to have a solid set of equipment behind you. Be prepared for this.
  • Someone in the San Diego area, or willing to come down.

Who this internship is NOT for:

  • Established professionals. You should know what I have to say, and going over camera settings wont be productive for you.
  • People wanting to get into different types of photography: Landscapes, babies, bands, clubs, etc. Although these things are often incorporated into wedding photography, these are not areas I specialize in or can give much insight.

If this is something that you are interested in, do me a favor. Leave a comment and tell me what you would like to learn. If there is enough genuine interest, I will work up some plans.

Audrey and Brian – Engaged

Audrey and Brian were referred to me by a fellow photographer, and I am sure glad they decided to book me. We had a lot of fun at their engagement shoot at Torrey Pines reserve. The scenery really fit their personalities, and it was a perfect day for photos.

Please enjoy the Torrey Pines Reserve Engagement Shoot.

Thank you for looking. Stay tuned for my next wedding to be posted soon.

Heather and Nick – Engaged

d like to introduce you to Heather and Nickolas. I was introduced to Heather by her sister, Theresa, who (whom?) I used to work with at Best Buy. Theresa is also a photographer, and since she cant photograph the wedding (Maid of honor – obviously) she asked if we could get together to talk about it. Needless to say, I was a bit nervous. Photography is photography, but when you are shooting for another photographer, let me tell you the stress level is raised a bit.

Anyways, we sat down, talked about which package would work best for Heather and Nick, and planned the engagement session. While Heather was a bit apprehensive at first about a session, Theresa and I talked her into it, and I am so glad we did.

I can tell that their wedding – coming up on May 14th, 2011 – is going to be fantastic indeed! A backyard wedding, filled with DIY decorations, I am sure this wedding will fall nothing less than the “rustic elegance” it was described as.

Anyways, on to the photos shall we?

Nick actually works with these machines, so it was great that I was able to arrange it to be there (we actually just stumbled upon it, but don’t tell them)

These are the photos I LOVE – the raw, true reaction. I try to make the engagement sessions fun and light hearted, and when I can capture an image like this, it really makes me smile.

Mission Trails is beautiful this time of year!

And another, great, fun shot!

This photo I think would look great as a large print!

And finally, to finish off the session with one of my favorite types of photos – silhouette. The cloudy day made for a very interesting sky. Who knew that this couple can still be so beautiful, even though you cannot see them.

As I mentioned earlier, I try to keep my engagements fun and light (with a dash of romance). I received one of the best compliments from this session when Heather posted these images on her Facebook page. When someone complimented her on the engagement photos, she proudly informed her friends when she posted, Dude his name is Bryan Koci and he is soooo funny! He made Nick so confortable the whole time. His company is red tie photography. He’s awesome!”

Once again, she posted, “Thanx guys. My photographer made us so very relaxed and fun”

These are the types of posts that I love to see, especially from Heather who was very tentative about doing the session in the beginning. It obviously didn’t take these two long to warm up to the idea or the session (about .02 milliseconds) and we were off.

Thank you very much Heather and Nick for being so outstanding, and I cannot wait to photograph your amazing wedding!

Kerry and Patrick – Engaged

Let me just start off by saying this couple holds a special place in my heart (just like all of my couples). I learned that Patrick got engaged last year at a Christmas party, put on by his mom, who also happens to have known me since I was really young and plays the piano for our church music group that I sing in. Patrick and I had been talking for 45 minutes – a little about his wedding, more about his beautiful bride-to-be, and soon after we went on our way. Flash forward to a few months later, I was talking to Frances and she passed my card along to Kerry, we started talking, and that was that.

We decided that Balboa Park would be fitting for an engagement session, seeing that they are having their reception at The Prado, and the fact they are both self-proclaimed “plant geeks”. Little did I know this phrase held so much weight. As we started in the cactus garden, Patrick and Kerry took turns naming every plant they saw – most of which I thought was scientifically named “plant” or “tree”. Obviously, I was wrong. It was a very informative engagement session, and I assure you I will learn a lot more plant names after their wedding.

Anyways, on with the photos!

Does it get any cuter?

A good one to end on, the plant nerdy-ness came out and gave us a great leaf that symbolized this beautiful day.

Stay tuned, for we will be back with Patric and Kerry’s wedding photos in October!
